The Healing Ministry
In the book of Job we read how Job, who was a ‘perfect and upright man’, was suddenly struck with illness, lost all that he had and was advised by his wife to curse God (Yahweh) and die. But Job tells her, ‘shall we receive good at the hands of God (Yahweh), and shall we not receive evil?’ i.e, having received abundant blessings from Him, should we complain when He takes them away?
Healing comes from God (Yahweh). We read in Ex.15:26, ‘I am the Lord that healeth thee’. One of the names of God (Yahweh) is ‘Yahweh Rapha’ which means the God who heals.
Ex.23:25. ‘Ye shall serve the Lord your God (Yahweh) and he shall bless thy bread and thy water and I will take sickness away from thee.’ Deut.32: 39,’I wound and I heal’. When we obey the Lord and live according to his commandments, He will bless us with good health.
He anoints people to heal others. Throughout the Bible, we see that the Lord anoints His chosen people to heal others. Elisha raise the Shunamite woman’s son from the dead (2Ki:4). He healed Naaman from leprosy (2Ki:5). Isaiah healed King Hezekiah when he was on his deathbed (2Ki:20)
Elijah raised the widow’s son from the dead (1 Ki:17)
Jesus Christ (Yahshua Messiah) gave power to the apostles to preach the kingdom of God (Yahweh) and to HEAL the sick Luke.2:1-2. We cannot go around healing the sick unless we are empowered by the Holy Spirit. One of the gifts of the Holy Spirit is the gift of healing. (1 Cor.12:9). This power Christ gave his disciples, when he first sent them out to preach the Gospel. He repeated when he renewed and enlarged their commission after his resurrection. Such was the power given to them that sometimes the sick were healed when their shadows fell on them, (Act.5:15) sometimes by laying hands on them, as the father of Publius, and others, were healed by Paul (Act.28:8) and sometimes by anointing with oil (Jas.5:14).
Peter healed a man who was lame from birth (Acts 3:1-8), a paralyzed man (Acts 9:32-35). He also raised Tabitha or Dorcas when she died (Acts 9:36-41).
Paul was healed by Ananias when he was struck with blindness on the road to Damascus (Acts9:17-19).
Now these gifts were bestowed by the Holy Spirit, on apostles, prophets, and pastors, or elders of the church, in those early times. The disciples, when they used the gift of healing, were proclaiming the Gospel to the Gentiles and the heathen. The effect of such healing was that people in large numbers believed that Jesus Christ (Yahshua Messiah) is the Messiah. They did not misuse this gift.
Healing ministry of today: The scriptures warn us that in the latter days false prophets would rise up and shall deceive many.(Matt.24: 11) .Sceva and sons tried to cast out demons by trying to imitate Paul, but the evil spirit fell on them and beat them and they fled naked.(Acts19:13) There are many such false prophets today who promise healing, but for a price or ‘donation’ as they call it.
True healing: If you want to be healed, your faith should be strong. Without faith it is impossible to please God (Yahweh) and He is not going to heal you if He is not happy with you In Luke8:43-48 we read about a woman with an issue of blood. She believed that if could touch the hem of His garment she would be healed. Messiah tells her,’ Thy faith has made thee whole’.
Blind Bartimaeus was sitting by the wayside when he heard that Jesus Christ (Yahshua Messiah) was passing by. He believed that He could heal him. When Bartimaeus cried out to the Lord, He had compassion on him and healed him.(Mark10:46.) We read that Bartimaeus received his sight and followed Jesus (Yahshua).
Consider this. With FAITH comes HEALING. After healing comes CONVERSION. Then you will be a WITNESS to the Lord.
When Jesus Christ (Yahshua Messiah) or the disciples and apostles healed the sick, there was complete healing. We never again read about that person falling sick again, there was no relapse or recurrence...unlike the faith healers and miracle workers of today who choose the people beforehand to heal in public meetings! Their healing is only temporary.
Healing ministry in today’s church:
The church has a very large role to play in the healing ministry. One is to build up the believers’ faith so that the sick can expect miracles.
Chain prayers and prayers of intercession (Matt18:19-20) should be done by the members.
The elders of the church should pray for the sick by laying on of hands and anointing with oil the sick (James. 5:14)
Teams of dedicated and sincere believers should visit the sick and spread the message of hope and comfort.
By holding the simple conviction that God answers prayers.(Matt.21: 22)
Have faith. Only believe, and you will receive answers to your prayers. ‘They that feared the Lord spoke to one another Mal 3;16-18…and to those who fear my name shall the Sun of Righteousness arise with healing in His wings’ (Mal.4:2) |
