The Beatitudes (Mt 5:3-12)
The Sermon on the Mount in Matthew Chapters 5-7, is one of the most popular passages in the Bible.
As we take a closer look at "The Sermon On The Mount," we notice first that section referred to as "The Beatitudes". In verses 3-12, we find Jesus discussing the blessedness of those who possess certain qualities. It is almost as though Jesus was answering two questions the people might have been asking:
1) Who are the citizens of this "kingdom of heaven"?
2) What benefits do they receive?
Only those who possess ALL of these qualities are the true citizens of the kingdom of heaven, because we may have some qualities but not for the right purpose.
Some may be "poor in spirit," but do not "hunger and thirst after righteousness"
Some may "mourn," but are not "pure in heart"
Some may be "meek," but are not "peacemakers"
Some may be "persecuted," but not "for righteousness' sake"
This passage is similar to 2 Pet.1:5-11,where various qualities are also listed, looking like a ladder into the everlasting kingdom".
Poor in Spirit:
Poverty means to cower, cringe like a beggar, who is ashamed, who wretchedly begs for money and worth. Poverty of the spirit means that the soul is bankrupt cleaned out not financially or materially but spiritually Poverty means recognition of personal, moral and spiritual unworthiness—spiritually, morally, personally, socially you are showing that you are in need of God (Yahweh).
We can therefore read this verse as, ‘blessed are those who realize that they have nothing within themselves to commend them to God (Yahweh), for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Only those who realize that they have no hope of getting there will get there!
King David, in 1Sam.18:18 and 2Sam.7:18, asks,’who am I…...Who am I and who is my family?’ He knew that he was not worthy to be Saul’s son-in-law. He tells the Lord that he was not worthy to receive all the blessings that the Lord had poured on him.
We also should realize that ‘by grace are ye saved through faith’ (Eph.2:5) Spurgeon, the well known preacher , once said,’the way to rise up to the kingdom is to sink within ourselves and before others’.
In Luke.18: 10-13, Jesus Christ (Yahshua Messiah) tells of a parable of two men, a Pharisee and a tax collector. The tax collector was poor in spirit because he was convicted of his spiritual poverty, he realized his position and humbled himself. Such people God will accept into His good favor (Is 57:15; 66:1-2)
The opposite of "poor in spirit" would be "proud of heart," and those who are such are more like
the Pharisee, who boasted of his self-righteousness.
The Laodiceans (Re 3:17-19), were also like the Pharisee. They were rich, had worldly possessions and felt they lacked nothing in this world. But the Lord shows them that they were nothing before Him.
Mourning:
We mourn when things do not go well with us, when we are disappointed with life. Mourning is not mourning after the difficulties of life. Ahab mourned because he could not get Naboth’s vineyard (1 Ki.21:1).
Mourning is not self pity or weeping continuously, mourning is not bereavement, mourning is not being silent for two minutes.
Archbishop Crammer who wrote the Book of Prayer (1662) wrote, ‘we acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness.’. That is true mourning. Paul, a chosen man of God (Yahweh), in spite of doing more to spread the gospel than any other apostle, realized that he was the chief among sinners! We never read in the Bible that Jesus (Yahshua) laughed or smiled. He was capable of laughing, but he was tired, hungry, thirsty, heard blasphemy, had to bear the sins of the world, He mourned for this world. In Luke.23:28 he says ,’daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me but for your selves and your children.’
So what are the benefits that the citizens of the Kingdom of Heaven receive? They are blessed! Why?
They are under the kingly rule of God (Yahweh).
They are in a spiritual kingdom, which today involves being in the "church," the PRESENT manifestation of the "kingdom of heaven" which will involve the "new heavens and new earth" in the kingdom's FUTURE and eternal manifestation.
They are comforted even now (2 Co 1:3-5) and in the future (Rev.21:1-4)
They will be filled with righteousness which we so desperately need, found only in Christ (Ph 3:8-9)
Those in the kingdom enjoy the forgiveness of sins through the blood of Jesus - Re 1:5-6
Presently, citizens of the kingdom can see God through the Lord Jesus Christ (Jn. 14:6-7) but in the future, we shall see him face to face - Re 21:3; 22:3-4
They are called the sons of God (Yahweh), even now (1Jn 3:1-2)
Do we see the sorrow of our sins? We don’t because
1. Our live for sin…who doesn’t?
2. Despair…too much sin, so Yahweh won’t forgive us.
3. Conceit…self importance…I don’t need forgiveness, I am not that bad.
4. Presumption…The grace of Yah can cover my sins. You may never see the grace of Yah if you continue like that!
5. Frivolity…thoughtlessness…I don’t care.
6. Postponement…plenty of time for that later.
If you look to the cross you will be comforted. If you mourn for your sins, you will be comforted…that is forgiven. If you mourn , the Comforter, Holy Spirit, will come and take you to the cross and you will have forgiveness of your sins, salvation, your mourning will elevate you to him. |
