God (Yahweh)’s Mercy:
As we enter the New Year, we owe this to God (Yahweh)’s mercy. We saw the sudden and tragic deaths of political leaders who were attending a rally promising a better life to their citizens. Unfortunately they couldn’t do any good for the society but died.
I am reminded of the story of the rich farmer who got a lot of harvest. He told himself to eat and enjoy life, but the same night he died, leaving everything behind.
Is it not God (Yahweh)’s mercy and grace that we have seen another year, as it is written in Ps.65:11,’thou crownest the year with thy goodness and thy paths drop fatness’. Mercy here means compassion or tenderness.
The Lord is compassionate and merciful to those who love him. (James.5:11). He redeems your life from destruction and crowns you with loving kindness and tender mercies and satisfies you with good things. Because of his mercy, he forgives all our sins and heals all our diseases (Ps.103:3). God (Yahweh) makes a covenant with his people, ‘for mountains shall depart and the hills be removed, but my kindness shall not depart from you, nor my covenant of peace be removed says the Lord who has mercy on you. (Isa.54:10)Mercy, grace, compassion, pity, loving kindness are synonyms, i.e., word having same meanings, showing God (Yahweh)’s favour and forgiveness.
When a person who does not deserve promotion is promoted, it shows an act of favour. When a man disobeys the law but is not punished, it shows an act of forgiveness.
God (Yahweh)’s mercy also shows favour to man though he does not worship God; neither regards him as an authority over the world. ‘It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed (Lam.3:22) We live because of his mercy. He gives air, water, food and clothing to every human being, though good or bad.
That is God (Yahweh)’s mercy as shown on us every morning in a new way (Lam.3:23) His mercy is everlasting (Ps.103:17, 138:8) .He is rich in mercy .Eph.2:4, because of his mercy he died on the cross to save man from sin and death. Titus2:5 says he saved us by his mercy. He redeems us from all difficulties for his mercy’s sake (Ps.44:26). God delighteth in mercy (Micah 7:18).i.e. God loves and takes pleasure to show mercy to them who ask for mercy. So King David asked the Lord, ‘Show us your mercy, O Lord, and grant us salvation (Ps.85:7)
Because of his mercy and favour, he will not allow any weapon formed against you to prosper but will be destroyed. (Isa.54:17) ‘The Lord will fight for you and you shall hold your peace. (Ex.14:14)
Mercy is reserved for the helpless:
God's mercy is the main, and often the only, recourse to which we may apply when we are in our state of misery, and thus we need to adopt an attitude similar to that of the psalmist--a dependent attitude. We need to come to the Lord in our weakness and cast ourselves upon Him. It means that you will have to admit your weakness, your need. It means that you will have to conclude that you do not have all the answers, nor the adequate resources
Some people exclude themselves from the mercy of God because they will not humble themselves and admit their weakness and helplessness. People's egos are often too big; personal pride often runs very deep. For these people to admit their weakness and helplessness is too humiliating, too degrading. If you want God (Yahweh)’s mercy, you have to humble yourself before him, realize that you are worthless.
Mercy is received through prayer:
The psalmist prays, "Make glad the soul of thy servant, for to Thee, O Lord, I lift up my soul...Give ear, O Lord, to my prayer; and give heed to the voice of my supplications!" (Ps.86: 4, 6). Prayer shows that your attitude is right before God (Yahweh), that you are willing to depend on him. Prayer is the visible acknowledgement that we cannot help ourselves, that God is our only recourse, and that we must cast ourselves on Him for mercy.
Pray confidently for his mercy:
We can be confident that God hears us when we pray, even though the answer is delayed. "For Thou, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive, and abundant in loving kindness to all who call upon Thee...In the day of my trouble I shall call upon Thee, for Thou wilt answer me" (Ps.86: 5,7). God will eventually come and deliver His people because He has pledged Himself to the welfare and care of them. We can be confident that God hears us when we pray, even though the answer is delayed we must not give up hope.
Mercy to meet all our needs:
Are you ill and feel that no doctor can cure you? Have even the doctors given up hope? Or are you going through a bad phase in life? Have your friends and loved ones deserted you? Or do you feel that your faith is weakening? Do you feel that all this talk of a good righteous life is a waste? What is your particular misery--physical, emotional, spiritual? My friend, there is mercy at the fount for you. Come and drink. As the psalmist says, "In the day of my trouble, I shall call upon Thee, for Thou wilt answer me" (Ps. 86: 7). Thank God for His mercy!
When his mercy and grace are on you, you will prosper, he will bless you abundantly and all the earth shall fear him, seeing the abundance (Ps.67). His loving kindness is better than life, because of his mercy, we will enter into heaven.
“The Lord bless thee and keep thee,
the Lord make his face to shine upon thee,
and be gracious unto thee,
the Lord lift up hi countenance upon thee ,
and give thee peace. (Num.6:24-26) |
