Salt and Light:
Matt.5:13-14. ‘Ye are the salt of the earth….Ye are the light of the world’
After Messiah taught the beatitudes to the multitudes, he compared men to salt and light by telling them that they were the salt of the earth and light of the world. You may wonder why we should be called the salt of the earth; salt is something that is so common that we hardly notice it, unless you're on a salt-free diet. We put it in everything that we cook. Why? Because it makes things taste better. That's one of the natural qualities of salt. It is a seasoning that enhances the flavor of food. Salt also provides us many valuable minerals.
It is also a preservative. Before refrigeration, most meat was preserved in one of two ways. It was either dried or smoked or it was packed in salt and salt cured. Packed in salt, meat would last for years.
Salt is also a curative. It has medicinal qualities. Before the time of modern medicine, salt was used as an antiseptic. It burned but salt was often poured into an open wound to clean it of any impurities. Sometimes a concoction of salt and vinegar was used for the same purpose, to clean and purify the wound so it would heal quicker and cleaner.

We are called to be the "salt of the earth." In other words, we are called to be a seasoning that enhances the flavor of life through a life of faith. We're called to be preservatives that help preserve the Biblical standards of morality. We have a message of hope and forgiveness from a Savior that can bring healing to all of the hurts in this world. We know all of these but there's one more aspect to salt, too.
Do you realize that salt creates thirst?  Have we ever made anyone thirsty for Yahshua? We are called to be the salt of the earth. We are called to season the world with the flavor of Grace. We are called to help preserve the world, preserve from decay. We are called to help bring healing. And we are called to make people thirsty for Yahshua.

Messiah also said, "You are the light of the world." Most folks today don't have a clue what darkness really is. We have street lights and lighted signs, porch lights and decorative lights around the house. Ever since Edison invented the light bulb, we have forgotten what darkness feels like. Light exposes the true nature of things.
Light exposes but light also reveals. Light gives life, it helps in producing chlorophyll which is essential for plants. It helps things grow. Try to remember how it was in a dark room. Suddenly the lights come on and there is a feeling of relief. Light brings happiness to our lives. Light dispels darkness.  Light is limitless. On a clear day, a lighted candle can be seen twenty miles away. We can see the light of stars which are millions of miles away.
Light illuminates all objects, good as well as bad. Light enables sight…we can see (Eph.5:14)

The light of Messiah exposes our need for salvation; it reveals where the dangers are and it reveals where safety, direction and new life can be found.
Light also promotes life. Indeed, I am told that even our broken bones flourish and mend better in the light, in the sun and in the heat. Natural light is - it goes into the deepest and the smallest little crevices, into the slightest crack, light will flood into the darkest place. Light awakens - I don't know whether you've ever been up at about five in the morning, but if you are you will hear what light does. You will hear the birds singing, you will hear all of nature awakening, because light awakens things. We are to be light in this dark world.

We are to be a guide to the world. We have to be like Messiah in Mark.7:24, for it says that: 'He entered into a house, and would have no man know it: but he could not be hid'! That's what we need today: a life with Christ cannot be hid from others. Such people have a life that people can look to and say: 'There is a holy man, there is a holy woman'.
Then, Messiah speaks of the candle.  The word translated “candle” refers to the ancient oil lamps.   Since most houses were windowless, an oil lamp was necessary for the occupants to be able to see. But, no one lit a lamp and then hid it under a basket.  The lamp was lit so that the people in the house could receive the light and see other objects and people in the room.  Did you notice that Messiah spoke of some people who hid their candle under a bushel? People hide their light under all kinds of bushels.  Some hide theirs under the bushel of fear. Joseph of Arimethaea, (John 19:38.) was a secret disciple of Messiah, because he was afraid of the Jews.

Others are hiding their light under the bushel of indifference.  They don’t seem to care that people are perishing and headed towards hell. Many Christians build a cocoon around themselves and live selfish lives. At least the Rich Man in hell had a concern regarding the souls of his five brothers,(Luke 16:19-31.)  We ought to be aware of the fact that everyday people are dying without Messiah.  They are perishing and we hold in our hands the message of salvation.  If we really cared, we would tell them about Him. Don’t hide your light under a bushel.  When you do one of two things is going to happen.  Either the basket will extinguish the candle, or the candle will consume the bushel.  When Messiah is really in your life, you will have a difficult time hiding His light.

Your light will reflect upon another. Matt.5:16 'Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven'. That word 'good works' means attractive things, things that don't repel people, but things that attract people to Messiah. If you are being good for Elohim, it will glorify Elohim.
