Many times, when we are faced with troubles or have to take some important decisions, we look towards the skies and ask ‘Lord, what is your will?’. We pray regularly ’thy will be done’. But what exactly is meant by the term ‘will of Elohim’?

Basically there are two wills of Elohim. The first is the sovereign will. This is God’s "ultimate" will.. This means that God sovereignly ordains everything that comes to pass. In other words, nothing happens outside of God’s will. This aspect of God’s will is seen in Eph.1:11, where we learn that God is the one “who works all things according to the counsel of His will,” and Job 42:2, "I know that You can do everything, And that no purpose of Yours can be withheld from You.” God is sovereign and nothing happens that is beyond His control.
One of the clearest is the way Jesus spoke of the will of God in Gethsemane when he was praying. He said, in Matt.26:39, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.” The will of God refers to the sovereign plan of God that will happen in the coming hours.
It is God’s sovereign control of all things. We will call this his “sovereign will” or his “will of decree.” It cannot be broken. It always comes to pass. “He does according to his will among the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand or say to him, ‘What have you done?’” (Dan. 4:35).

The other meaning for “the will of God” in the Bible is his “will of command.” His will is what he commands us to do. The will of command is contained in his laws and ordinances and his commandments. We have a choice to obey or disobey. Jesus said, “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven” (Matt. 7:21). Not all do the will of his father. He says so. “Not everyone will enter the kingdom of heaven.” Why? Because not all do the will of God.

In this aspect, we Christians have an advantage over unbelievers. Our Lord has already planned the way for us but also set the priorities for us. We also have his word to guide us. God mentions at least six things in his Word that are part of his will for our lives.

1. All should be saved: 1Ti 2:4. “Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.” This is the first and most important will of Elohim. He wants all to be saved. 2Pet.3:9 says that he is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. Admit your sin. Believe that Jesus Christ died in your place and for your sins. Put your trust in him as your personal Savior. Start living a holy life and God will forgive your sins. He will give you eternal life. The next step in your life should be to bring others to Elohim. You see, evangelism should have a priority in your life now.

2. Be filled with the Spirit: Eph.5:17.“So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit.” Here is the second revelation of God’s will. When you are drunk with wine you are stupid and the drink takes control of your senses. When you are filled with the Holy Spirit, someone else controls you, the Spirit of Elohim. How can we be filled with the Spirit? We should confess to God those things in our lives which have been against his wishes. We must yield ourselves to his control. Rom 12:1, ‘I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.’

The word of Christ should dwell in us richly. As we meditate on God’s Word, our hearts are drawn to Christ. Spiritual things take on greater importance for us and begin to fill our lives. We are controlled or dominated by the Holy Spirit as he wants us to be. Luke.4:1 says, ‘And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness’. He was filled with the Spirit and led by the Spirit.

3. Be pure and holy: 1 Thes.4:3.“For this is the will of God, your sanctification; that is, that you abstain from sexual immorality.” It is God’s will that we be holy. The word sanctification means holiness, consecration, dedication to God. The Word of God makes it clear that to have sexual relations outside the bond of marriage is impure. Elohim always desires purity.

4. Give thanks always: 1 Thes5:18. “In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” This is where many Christians hesitate. They thank God for the good things that happen to them, but they cannot bring themselves to thank him for the problems. We can be genuinely thankful in our hearts for tragedies such as that, knowing that they are part of God’s perfect plan for our spiritual enrichment. God’s will for your life is that you give thanks always, in every situation, for everything.

5. Be submissive: 1 Pet.2:13-15. “Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake… for so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men:” It is God’s will for us to submit ourselves to the laws of the land. The only exception to that rule occurs when man’s laws contradict the commands of God. Then we ought to obey God rather than man, just as Peter and John did when the Jewish council told them to stop preaching in the name of Jesus. (Acts.5:29) Believers generally are asked to submit to the spiritual leaders of their local churches. In fact, all of us are to develop a submissive spirit toward each other.

6. Suffer for his sake: 1 Pet3:17. “For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing.” If we live godly lives in this world, we will see some opposition for it. That is God’s will, because it can draw us closer to him and strengthen our spiritual lives. ““For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake.” (Phil.1:29)
